A short, plain summary of what MakeMeACabinet collects and why. No advertising, no cross-site tracking, no data sold to anyone.
Who we are
MakeMeACabinet is a product of Seaport Research & Development LLC, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, which is responsible for the data described here. To ask about it, use the contact page.
Guiding principles
MakeMeACabinet is a project to build a community-supported tool for amateur and professional builders. Currently in beta and developed and conceived by one person, I believe it is time to bring back the concept of donationware as an alternative business model for the software industry.
In practical terms, this means that going forward you can expect to see things like donation links, a Patreon, and possibly affiliate links for hardware and supplies. I believe that if we offer users enough value, they will be happy to share some of that back with us. We may eventually offer native mobile apps that are paid, but the web version will remain free to use. Like you, I am tired of endless subscriptions, upsells, and in-app purchases to unlock basic features. This is why the core features of MMAC are available free to any user without registration.
My goal is to find ways to support the continued hosting and development of the product in the least-offensive ways possible, including strictly limiting data sharing. As I do this, I promise to always be maximally transparent about changes or new features, and provide you with choices to opt out of anything new that you don't like.
— Colin Kingsbury, MMAC Founder/Developer/Chief Everything Officer
What we collect
If you create an account: the email address you sign up with, a display name if you set one, the rooms and cabinets you design, and when each was created and last changed. We store this so the application can show you your own work.
If you visit without an account: a first-party cookie holding a random id lets us count how many visitors start designing a cabinet. If you arrive through a marketing link, a second cookie remembers which link it was for 30 days, so we know which channels bring people in. Neither contains personal data or is shared with anyone.
Email: if you have an account, we send account email (password resets, replies to your support messages) and, if you opt in, product updates and tips. Resend delivers our email and sees only the message and your address. Every optional email has an unsubscribe link, and you can change what you receive in your account settings.
Page views: Vercel Web Analytics counts which pages are visited, the referring site, and a rough country and device type. It sets no cookie and builds no profile.
Product analytics and session recording: we use PostHog to see how people use the design tools and where they get stuck. It records events (such as placing a cabinet or generating an export) and session recordings: a replay of what you did on this site's pages, including the cabinet sizes and choices you make. It is not video and sees nothing outside this site. Email addresses are masked, passwords are never recorded, and the messaging pages aren't recorded at all. PostHog stores this data in the United States.
If you use MakeMeACabinet from ChatGPT or Claude: the chatbot sends us a short description of the cabinet it wants (its type, size, layout, drawer or shelf count, and a name if it gives one), and we send back the drawings, the parts list and the cutting plan. We don't receive your chat messages, only that description, and we don't store the designs: each one travels inside its Open in MakeMeACabinet link. ChatGPT also sends an anonymous user id, which is not your name or email address. We use it to limit how many designs one person can make in an hour, and in PostHog to count how the chat app is used. Claude sends no user id. We share no account data with either chatbot. What you type in the chat is handled by OpenAI or Anthropic under their own privacy policies.
Contact form: if you send us a message through the contact page, we receive your email address, the name you give (if any) and your message, by email through Resend. We use them only to reply to you.
Server logs: like every web service, our servers record incoming requests, including IP addresses and browser types, for fixing problems.
What we don't do
- No advertising trackers, pixels, or ad-network SDKs.
- No selling, sharing, or licensing of personal data.
- No cross-site tracking. Our cookies are first-party only, and nothing we use follows you to other sites.
- No marketing emails unless you opt in.
Consent (EU / UK / EEA visitors)
If you are visiting from the EU, the EEA or the UK, or we can't tell where you are, we ask first: a banner offers Accept and Decline. Until you accept, we set no cookie and PostHog doesn't run, so nothing is recorded. If you decline, the site works the same. Elsewhere these are on by default, and you can turn them off as described below. Vercel's page-view counts store nothing on your device, so they continue either way.
How to opt out
- To stop product analytics and session recording, delete the
mmac_analyticscookie. Your browser's Do Not Track setting, or a private window you then close, has the same effect for that visit. - To stop being counted as a visitor, delete the
mmac_anon_idcookie. To change your answer to the consent banner, deletemmac_anon_consentand reload a design page. - Any standard content or tracker blocker stops the page-view counter, and the site works normally without it.
- To remove an account and all of its data, contact us through in-app messaging or the contact page.
Data retention
- Account data: for as long as the account exists.
- Session recordings: deleted automatically by PostHog after 30 days.
- Analytics events: kept under PostHog's standard retention.
- Anonymous visitor counts: kept as usage totals; the cookie expires after a year.
- Chat-app hourly usage counters: deleted after 48 hours.
- Server logs: kept briefly, for fixing problems.
- Contact-form messages: kept in our email as long as we need them to answer you.
Children
MakeMeACabinet is not directed to children under 13 (or 16 in the EU / UK / EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
MakeMeACabinet is an actively developed prototype, so this policy may change as the product evolves. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
